NYTimes: Joe Rosenthal, Photographer at Iwo Jima, Dies

Joe Rosenthal, the Associated Press photographer who captured the enduring image of the American fighting man in World War II with his depiction of five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising a huge American flag over the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, died Sunday in Novato, Calif. He was 94.

He had been rejected for military service because of abysmally poor eyesight, but in one-four-hundredths of a second — the shutter timing on his Speed Graphic camera — Joe Rosenthal took the most famous photograph of the Second World War.  [ MORE ]

NEW YORK Aug 21, 2006 (AP)— Paris Hilton is no stranger to self-promotion. But when she asked DJs to play songs from her upcoming debut album, "Paris," last spring, she wasn't so confident.

"People go crazy," the 25-year-old socialite/reality TV star/singer says in an interview in the September issue of Blender, on newsstands Tuesday. "They love it. Everyone's like, `Who is this?' I don't tell. Because I don't want someone putting their phone up and recording it and making a ring tone off of it.

"I think when people don't know it's me, they won't judge it. But if they know it's me, then they'll be like, `Ugh.' They won't even dance."

"Paris" the album was set for release Tuesday. Hilton's breathy, reggae-infused single, "Stars Are Blind," has climbed to the top of Billboard's dance music chart.  [ MORE ]

Stallone Settles With The 'Real' Rocky

Chalk up another victory for Rocky -- that is, the real Rocky, Chuck Wepner, the man on whom Sylvester Stallone based his Oscar-winning 1976 film.

Last week, lawyers for Wepner and Stallone filed notice in U.S. District Court that they had settled Wepner's 2003 suit for an undisclosed sum.

Wepner had originally sued the Rambo and Demolition man star for $15 million, claiming Stallone improperly used his name "to promote the Rocky movies and related products for commercial purposes without…consent and without compensation," according to court documents.

(Stallone has never denied he based the film on Wepner's 1975 boxing match with then heavyweight champion, Muhammad Ali).  [Story continues at Forbes.com ]

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- A lot more of Hollywood's elite that go to the Oscars will be coming home empty-handed.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has said it will no longer give out gift bags to presenters or performers after facing heightened scrutiny by the Internal Revenue Service.

"It seemed a little inappropriate to offer a gesture of thanks that then carried with it a [tax] obligation," said Leslie Unger, a spokesperson for the Academy.

Earlier Thursday, the IRS said it had reached an agreement with the Academy on resolving "outstanding tax responsibilities" on Academy Awards gift baskets given out up through 2005.
