FMQB: Editorial by Dennis Constantine on Arbitron Ratings & PPM
Until a new digital monitoring system is put in place, we’re stuck with this ancient pen and paper system of measuring radio listenership. However, the reporting of radio listening is only the beginning of the problems with the ratings system.
Coming soon to the rescue: the PPM (Personal People Meter). Radio measurement will finally enter the digital realm. This will be a major improvement in radio listening measurement, as survey participants will no longer have to physically write down everything they listen to. They will only have to carry a pager-type device that will hear sub-audible tones that will register what stations they are listening to, intentionally or not.
